AP: Benoit strangled wife, smothered son

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son. Steroid abuse has been linked to depression, paranoia, and aggressive behavior or angry outbursts known as "roid rage."

Frak, No! Battlestar Preps Final Voyage

The Galactica is ready to be mothballed.
The brain trust behind Sci Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica on Friday announced plans to wrap up the critically acclaimed cult series after its upcoming fourth season.
"This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and, finally, an end," executive producers Ronald Moore and David Eick said in a statement.
"Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end, and we've decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there: We're going out with a bang."
And despite losing their top-rated original series, the Sci Fi overlords are okay with the move.
Mark Stern, the network's executive vice president of original programming, said he and his fellow suits "respect the producers' decision to end the series."
Last month at the Saturn Awards, where Battlestar was named Best Syndicated/Cable Series, star Edward James Olmos hinted that the show was ready to make its final voyage.
That prompted Eick and Sci Fi to issue a statement asserting "no decision had been made" on the show's fate. "I promise you that when Ron and I make a decision about Galactica's future, we'll let you know," said Eick, who is also producing NBC's buzzed-about remake of Bionic Woman, which debuts next season.
Premiering in 2003 as a miniseries, Moore and Eick's Battlestar Galactica was a "reimagined" take on ABC's 1978 Star Wars-riffing sci-fi show and its spinoffs. Moore and Eick stuck to the original's basic premise—the robotic Cylons rebel against their human masters and virtually annihilate the race, sending the few survivors in a quixotic interstellar journey to find a mythical, lost "13th colony" known as Earth. The "rag-tag fugitive fleet" is led by crusty Admiral William Adama (Olmos) and cancer-stricken President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell).
However, the new Battlestar jettisoned the high camp of the original in favor of a taut serialized drama focusing on strong character development and emotional conflict, while taking plot cues from 9-11 and the war in Iraq.
The storytelling formula has proved a success with TV critics. Although it has yet to earn a top-tier Emmy nod, the new Battlestar received a Peabody last year and was named to the American Film Institute's Top 10 list of television shows for two years running.
"It's been a wonderful, creative experience," Moore said during a conference call Friday. "I feel like we've had enough time...It feels like the momentum of the series is moving to a conclusion."
He added that he and Eick planned on tackling the series' lingering questions in the remaning episodes.
"The intention is to concentrate on the characters and their relationships and bring them all to an end point. I don't know if we'll resolve every single thing…but the intention is to move toward what is the final chapter," Moore said. "The show has always been about a search for Earth…so it will definitely figure into this year's story line."
Eick, meanwhile, said he intended to use Battlestar actors on Bionic Woman and other future TV projects. "We stumbled onto the greatest collection of actors I've ever been a part of...[and] I'm trying to make use of this cast as much as possible." Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) guest stars on the Bionic Woman pilot and will likely be a recurring character, he said.
Perhaps because the rumors of the show's demise have persisted, diehards took the news in stride Friday.
"Seriously, it's sad to know it for sure, but I'd rather know now than find out with just a few episodes left. We can savor every moment with the full knowledge that the journey is almost over," TowelOfApollo wrote on Sci Fi's Battlestar message board.
"Every end is a beginning," added Punchface. "In this case, it's a point in the history of sci-fi as a genre where we will be able to say 'this is where the genre began to really get respect.' Firefly and Farscape may have started it, but it was Battlestar Galactica that really got the ball rolling."
So much for the resistance.
The swan-song season is currently in production in Vancouver, with the first of its final 22 episodes scheduled to launch in early 2008. To tide fans over, however, Sci Fi has commissioned an extended two-hour Battlestar Galactica stand-alone episode, titled "Razor," to air in November focusing on the adventures of the Galactica's sister ship, the Pegasus.

Each April The FRESH FRUIT FESTIVAL gives awards to the entries in the past year's festival voted best by audiences and the Board of Directors. Also presented at that time are special lifetime awards for those who have supported LGBT arts. For performance in a Two-Spirit Evening held at New York's Conscious Collective in 2006, Landa Lakes and Samantha Richards of the San Francisco based Native American drag troupe the Brush Arbor Gurlz will be awarded Outstanding Artist Awards at the upcoming Fourth Annual Fruits of Distinction Awards.

Murry Hill will host the Awards to be held on Monday, April 16th, at the Metropolitan Room in New York City starting at 9:30pm. Landa and Samantha will perform in a short segment during this formal event.

Landa Lakes, the matron or mother of the Arbor, explained the origin of the troupes name is derived from Southeastern tribal culture. During the summer and early fall months also known as stomp dance season, Southeastern tribes erect brush arbors. Girls often seek shade under the arbors which gives them ample opportunity to flirt with the roaming boys. The troupe includes dragsters from the Chickasaw, Cherokee, Navajo, Tohono O'odem, Metis and Choctaw Nations.

Upon learning that she will be receiving an Outstanding Artist Award, Samantha that she was honored and excited. As a long time performer in both drag and the theatre world, Samantha said that she loved performing with her Native American brothers and sisters and having the opportunity to share a slice of something traditional and personal with diverse audiences.

can be viewed as beautifully balanced. Fittingly seen as a time of change
and new beginnings, the Native American community has chosen this day to
commemorate the National Native AIDS Awareness Day. By choosing this
day, we remind our communities that regeneration is possible through taking
an active role in our health.

Examining the increase of HIV/AIDS, we find that American Indian/Alaska
Natives have the third highest rate behind the African American and Latino
populations. Testing is often a real challenge for Native people who live in
rural areas. Rural areas often mean facing stigma, limited HIV testing services
and health care facilities that are shared by a closely tied community. Native
Americans living in San Francisco have the highest AIDS incidence (cases per
100,000) of any non-white ethnic group in the city. This diagnosis, compounded
with other conditions such as homelessness, substance abuse and general
poor health, require a sustained and culturally-sensitive response.

The Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits, the Native American Health Center,
the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center, the SF LGBT Center
and the Native American AIDS Project would like you to join us in a sunrise
ceremony (6:32am) with the NAAP drum circle in Dolores Park (18th St and
Dolores St) on March 21st, 2007. Breakfast will be served at 8am at the
Native American Aids Project located at 470 Carolina St. between 18th St
and Mariposa. In the evening, A Celebration of Life gathering with music,
food, and one lucky person will receive a Pendleton Blanket in a free drawing
will be held at 7pm in the SF LGBT Center at 1800 Market St. For more

Among the last, haggard bands to return from the Badlands was that of Big Foot.... He tried to find safety at the town of Pine Ridge, but the soldiers found him first. Dying of pneumonia, Big Foot surrendered peacefully. He had the misfortune to fall into the hands of the Seventh Cavalry. Officers and men were revengeful and trigger-happy. They brought the Indians to a campsite near Wounded Knee, already well within the borders of the reservation.

Big Foot's group was surrounded by three thousand men. Guns were trained on them. Then their wagons and blankets were searched for weapons. A medicine man named Yellow Bird made the soldiers nervous by throwing dust at them and uttering war cries. A deaf-mute boy [probably Black Fox] dropped and accidentally discharged an old rifle. This was the signal for a general massacre. The Indians had been disarmed. They did not even have a half dozen weapons left. Chief Big Foot was shot down in the soldiers' tent where he had been under medical care. The Hotchkiss guns were pouring shells into groups of mothers and children. Out of 250 Indians, 200 were killed, 62 of them mothers and children.

The soldiers had about sixty men killed and wounded, most of them by their own bullets. As the soldiers fired into the camp from opposite sides, they naturally hit many of their own comrades. The bodies of the Indians, frozen stiff into grotesque postures, were stacked up like corded wood and buried together in a ditch. A photographer took pictures. The soldiers would have souvenirs to send back to their families.

Eyelash transplants...now a reality!

Think you've seen it all when it comes to cosmetic surgery?

Look more closely. Eyelash transplant surgery wants to become the new must-have procedure for women -- and the occasional man -- convinced that beauty is not so much in the eye of the beholder as in front of the eye itself.

Using procedures pioneered by the hair loss industry for balding men, surgeons are using "plug and sew" techniques to give women long, sweeping lashes once achieved only by glued on extensions and thick lashings of mascara.

And just like human hair -- for that is the origin -- these lashes just keep on growing.

"Longer, thicker lashes are an ubiquitous sign of beauty. Eyelash transplantation does for the eyes what breast augmentation does for the figure," said Dr Alan Bauman, a leading proponent of eyelash transplants.

"This is a brand new procedure for the general public (and) it is going to explode," Bauman told Reuters during what was billed as the world's first live eyelash surgery workshop for about 40 surgeons from around the world.

Under the procedure, a small incision is made at the back of the scalp to remove 30 or 40 hair follicles which are carefully sewn one by one onto the patient's eyelids. Only light sedation and local anesthetics are used and the cost is around $3,000 an eye.

The technique was first confined to patients who had suffered burns or congenital malformations of the eye. But word spread and about 80 percent are now done for cosmetic reasons.

For many women, eyelash surgery is simply an extra item on the vast nip tuck menu that has lost its old taboos.

More than 10 million cosmetic procedures -- from tummy tucks to botox -- were performed in the United States in 2005, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The figure represents a 38 percent increase over the year 2000.

Erica Lynn, 27, a Florida model with long auburn hair, breast implants and a nose job, had eyelash transplants three years ago because she was fed up with wearing extensions on her sandy-colored lashes.

"When I found out about it, I just had to have it done. Everyone I mention it to wants it. I think eyelashes are awesome. You can never have enough of them," Lynn said.

Bauman, who practices in Florida, does about three or four a month. Dr. Sara Wasserbauer, a Northern California hair restoration surgeon, says she has been inundated by requests.

"I have been getting a ton of eyelash inquiries ... If I had $10 dollars for every consultation, I'd be a rich woman."

The surgery is not for everyone. The transplanted eyelashes grow just like head hair and need to be trimmed regularly and sometimes curled. Very curly head hair makes for eyelashes with too much kink.

11:00am: Get SF Pride off to a good start with "Shake The Feathers" to held at the Friendship House of American Indian at 56 Julian St. It is a one day wellness conference put on by the Native American Health Center and the Friendship House, the conference ends with drag show, fashion show, poetry, comedy and the drag stylings of Brush Arbor Gurlz.

June 24th, Saturday
3pm: The women will converge at Delores Park. The Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits will open the stage with L Frank and Shar at 3pm. Native American/First Nations women are invited to join BAAITS on stage, the Dyke March organizers would like to remind us that men are encouraged to support the women only from the sidelines and respect that this is a women's space.

June 25th, Sunday
9:30am: The Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits would like to welcome Two-Spirit Native American/First Nations people and allies to march in the San Francisco 2006 Pride Event this Sunday, June 25th. We are contingent 80, please meet us at 9:30am at Beale St between Market St and Mission St.

11:45am: The Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits will open the Main Stage with an invocation by California Native American Activist and Artist L Frank.

All Day: The BAAITS booth will be located in the newly created Clean and Sober Space on Golden Gate between Larkin and Hide. Come stop by the booth and visit or volunteer to help staff.
